So Much for Eating Less Meat… I Do Love a Good Burger!

After watching the Netflix documentary, You are What you Eat: a Twin Experiment, in the new year, I was leaning towards eating less meat, specifically burgers, and getting my family on board. Matt seemed semi-keen and I was determined to not eat another beef burger for months… that lasted about a week and a half.

Before the Christmas break, Matt and I had a lunch date and ended up here. We had intended to go to the restaurant at this local bookstore, which was steps away, but the wait would have been about an hour. The diversion was worth it. So good that Matt tried to recreate the burger I’d ordered at home, before we watched the documentary. And again, after, with a plant-based alternative. I really wanted to love the Impossible burger, but nothing quite compares to a real beef patty.

And so good that we had to order it again recently (pictured above). It was better the first time in the restaurant, but that is usually the case when you get delivery.

Since we’ve been in Saskatoon, a vast number of our meals have been burgers and fries, either homemade from scratch, previously frozen and subsequently barbecued or from restaurants.

For the longest time, Blythe, our middle child, refused to even try burgers, although she had no problem eating these. So it was not that she wasn’t into eating meat. It was more the way the meat was presented to her. But with the new year and new goals, she had made one of hers to try new foods. So she ate her first whole burger here and has since tried various other meats we’ve cooked.

Brighton, our youngest, has gradually eaten less meat, simply because he seems to be going through a picky phase. Our eldest, Whitney, has mostly eaten what we cook and eat since she was nine or ten. Rarely will she refuse a burger. She was a bit miffed that we didn’t order her one too the other day.

While I’m not advocating to completely give up meat, I am striving to eat less – for the environment and simply because I feel a little lighter and more energized when I do. There are other ways to get your daily protein intake and with the rising cost of groceries, I don’t mind cutting back on meat.

If you are in the mood for a good burger though, try Moxie’s loaded cheeseburger!
