This time of year, just like Mother Nature the past few days, it seems that it’s easy to feel under the weather. Our household, like many, is usually hit with illness within the first few weeks of the kids going back to school. Being back in the mix with hundreds of other little germ magnets/spreaders means at least one of our kids will bring something home.
Like clockwork, this past week, our youngest missed a couple of days, and our middle one missed half a day. And while both Brighton and Blythe seemed fine both days after getting to stay home, whatever they had was passed on to yours truly.
Year ago, I came across a recipe for this simple elixir to ward off illness. I’m pretty sure that I found it through this wonderful illustrator‘s blog (but I think she has since changed domain names, so I cannot source it). Now, nearly every time I feel like a cold is coming on, I will make this drink. When our kids or Matt are sick, I will make it for them too, though all but Matt would rather not drink it.
Almost always, the magical combination of ginger, honey and lemon will stave off illness in a day or two. If it doesn’t, then either it wasn’t consumed soon enough or the illness is simply too strong.
I have had four cups in the past 36 hours, and I feel like the illness is kicking my butt this time. So I guess that’s just my body’s way of telling me to get more rest.
Of course, I used up the last piece of ginger yesterday. But if you have some ginger on hand, here is the recipe for those who are interested or in need:
GINGER LEMON HONEY TEA
INGREDIENTS:
2-inch piece of ginger peeled and cut into discs
4-5 cups of water
1- 2 Tbsp. raw honey
1 tsp. lemon juice
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Place ginger and water in a small pot. Bring water to a boil and simmer for about 10 minutes.
2. Ladle water into a mug, straining ginger (if needed).
3. Stir in honey and lemon to taste.
4. Sip and feel better!
Makes about 2-3 cups.
Another sign that illness is taking over is that my hands, neck and feet get cold, so bundling up with a scarf or cozy plush socks is a must. This usually means naps are in order.
Yesterday and this afternoon, I just had to lie down for a bit, and was promptly joined by each of our kitties, one after another. They are the sweetest and make our lives that much better, every day!
I already feel like I’m on the road to recovery!
