A Small But Impactful Home Update

A home update doesn’t have to be huge to make a difference. For the longest time, I’ve had grievances with the entrance mat I had bought for the hallway between the garage and the basement entrances. Scratch that. I’ve had grievances with the sawdust that Matt brings up from the basement and attaches itself to the mat to never release. Scratch that again, I’ve had grievances with Matt…

Okay, you get the picture. I was fed up with the entrance mat (“Matt”). I made the wrong purchase last summer. Years of living with a woodworker should have taught me to never buy something with enough pile to embed endless amounts of sawdust in. In our Toronto home, any bath mats we had in our basement bathroom would die a horrible death from sawdust suffocation since Matt’s workshop was in the basement.

How about now?

We went to Home Depot earlier this week because our lawn was in dire straits and the mower I had ordered was late. So we bought the cheapest, smallest lawn mower and edger they had and I almost made another poor entrance mat decision. Thankfully Matt stopped me and said we needed to find something utilitarian that could be easily hosed off but not at all pretty, like this. I was not about to cave and give up on buying something more aesthetically pleasing, though.

So after searching online, I finally found this set on Amazon. While it is not your typical absorbent entrance mat – it is called a kitchen mat – it still works to protect the floor and is easily washable with a hose. And it is so much more inviting than the grey one we previously had.

It also came with a smaller mat that I put at our back door to replace an old Ikea bath mat that we were using there. I suppose I have a tendency to use things in atypical ways. But I think any piece you add to your home should be multifunctional. Matt tries to follow that rule before buying a new kitchen gadget or tool. I apply that rule to home decor, furniture and clothing.

What new things have you brought into your home to update it recently? Any rules you follow?

Of course, it has only been days since we got these mats, so they are still pristine looking. We’ll have to see how they hold up after rainy, wet weather. We’ve had so much in the past month, our weeds really had a chance to grow.

Wishing all the dads out there a Happy Father’s Day weekend! Matt has asked to play badminton indoors for a change so we’ll be doing that on Sunday. Happy weekend to all!
